The birth of a baby lightens up a household. The whole house starts resonating with laughter and giggles of the newborn. There is an all-pervasive fragrance of the baby lingering everywhere. The little ones are the harbinger of good luck, who brings with them unbridled happiness and a fresh lease of hope into the family.

Thus, the whole family comes together to ensure the health and well being of the infant and strives to work towards the baby’s physical and cognitive development. However, owing to ignorance, the baby’s life is often put to threat of malnourishment and acute weakness.

According to Gynecologists, it is absolutely essential that infants are administered colostrum immediately after birth. Colostrum is the first secretion of the mammary glands of the mother after the birth of the child. Rich in antioxidants, only once in human life can an infant have colostrum, which is secreted by the mother for three consecutive days following childbirth. There is no substitute to this elixir. Breastfeeding within an hour of childbirth can bring down infant mortality rate substantially. The death of one out of five babies can be prevented with proper breastfeeding. Colostrum is also an important source of protein, which helps in proper development of the baby’s intestines. It also entails Immunoglobulin that strengthens the baby’s immune system and prevents him/her from different types of allergies.

Figures state that out of the 14 lakh babies born in Madhya Pradesh every year, only 4.8 lakhs are given colostrum after birth. The remaining 9.2 lakhs are deprived of it. This indicates that maximum babies born in the state are at life risk and have high chances of being malnourished. Let us look at some figures:
> 80.08% Institutional Deliveries take place in Madhya Pradesh of which 93.08% happen in urban areas and 6.04% take place in rural areas.
> Caesarian Delivery happen in 42.07% urban areas and 38-0% rural areas. Thus, in most cases, breastfeeding following a caesarian delivery cannot take place.

There can be myriad reasons behind the above mentioned discrepancies, ranging from negligence of doctor and nursing staff at nursing homes to family members and in many occasions, even the husband. We can only imagine how heavily this ignorance can cost to the life of the baby!

In the wake of the above mentioned figures, it is important to understand that along with the mother, it is also the responsibility of the family members to take care of the health of the newborn and make certain the baby is breastfed within an hour of his/her birth. No child should be deprived of this lifesaver.

To disseminate information on the role of colostrum in the life of a baby and the significance of breastfeeding after the birth of a child , Women and Child Development Department, Madhya Pradesh is trying to understand ‘Why infants are not being breastfed immediately after birth and how we can create awareness on it?’
The Department is seeking suggestion on the following points:
· How to make family members more responsible towards the need of breastfeeding a child post birth?
· How many people are informed about the need to breastfeed a baby immediately after birth?
· The importance of colostrum in the life of a newborn.
· Ways to create awareness on the significance of colostrum in the society.
· Ways to create awareness among nursing staffs in nursing homes about it.

Your suggestions can be largely instrumental in making newborns in Madhya Pradesh healthier and in bringing down infant mortality rate. Share your valuable suggestions at www.mp.mygov.in.
