The first hour after a baby is born is often referred to as the “power hour.”

What happens in an hour can make all the difference. Putting newborns to the breast within the first hour of life can make the difference between life and death.

FACTS THAT JUSTIFY WHY IT IS IMPORTANT :
● The first vaccine to a child is colostrum ( a sticky yellow-white substance yielded by the mother's breast soon after birth which is rich in antibodies and essential nutrients) which is found in mother’s milk. Every newborn should be given this liquid gold in the first feed because there is no substitute to mother’s milk colostrum.
● Feeding colostrum in the first hour increases the likelihood babies will continue to be breastfed which gives them a head start in the "race against malnutrition".
● Skin-to-skin contact with the mother immediately after birth helps babies to form bonding with the mother well and also latching correctly.
● The feed in first hour after birth helps in building the immunity of the infant.
● It also confers benefits to the mother, such as improved lactation and less loss of blood.
● Breastfeeding within first hour of birth can prevent loss of 1 out of 5 early child deaths.

Statistics show, out of 1.4 million children who take birth in Madhya Pradesh every year, only 4.8 lakh children get lifesaving milk (colostrum) immediately after birth, while 9.2 million children are deprived of it.

World Breastfeeding Week is observed in the first week of August to focus attention on the promotion and support of breastfeeding. The slogan of World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2018 is Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life.
