“Shall we go out?”

It won’t take a second to guess that the “we” in the question is women
and it asks, “Shall women go out”?

The everyday movement of a woman’s life is never a day without the fear of feeling unsafe. Sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence in public spaces are an everyday occurrence for women and girls around the world—in urban and rural areas. It happens on the streets, in and around public transportation, workplaces, and almost everywhere. It restricts the freedom to move, study, work, and leisure.

The problem, however, is not always the infrastructure. Sometimes it is as basic as travelling back home. Sexual abuse, street harassment, verbal abuse, passing lewd comments, physical attacks, staring, groping are common occurrences.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2015, there is 53.9% violence against women (CAW) in the country. The worldwide survey shows that 60 to 70 percent of women feel insecure in public places.

Women are always in fear while they move around to work. Sometimes they have to sacrifice certain opportunities in education, training, employment and social life due to the fear of unsafety. This also limits their participation in the fields of sports, entertainment or other social activities which overall affects the development of a sector. Equal participation of girls and women in the development of the country is essential and mandatory and this can only happen when women feel safe to work and move around fearlessly.

In order to ensure safe public places and workplace for women, the Women and Child Development Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh is organizing a competition on the occasion of International Women's Day which is held on March 8, 2019. The main aim of this contest is to bring awareness and action that makes every girl and woman feel safe wherever they are. It also aims to instill a sense of courage and strength among women that increase their participation in every sector, thereby leading to the development of the nation.

The Department invites your ideas and suggestions on:
1. Making public places more secure for women
2. Making the workplace a fully safe environment
3. Women security in public transport
4. Create an environment free from sexual violence for girls and women in all educational institutions
5. Making tourist destinations safe for women

The best three suggestions on each of the above topic issue will be given Rs 1000/- each.

Get involved in creating a safer city to live in!
