How many of you know there are 32 species of plants in Madhya Pradesh that are rare and threatened? Have you wondered what would happen if these species became extinct?

Madhya Pradesh is blessed with greenery. You can travel in any direction of the state and the lush forests promise to not let you down. The recorded forest area in the state is 94.689 square kilometres, which is 30.72% of its geographical area. The reserved forests constitute 65.36%, Protected Forests 32.84% and Unclassed Forests 1.80%. The forests of Madhya Pradesh is also known for having a varied and unique biodiversity.

Majority of villages in the state are located on the fringes of the forest areas. With little scope for mainstream development, forests serve as the primary source of livelihood for these villagers. From fuel to fodder for their cattle, the forests provide them all. In addition to this, there are a host of items like leaves, flowers, fruits, barks, seeds, roots, etc, which constitute significantly in the socio-economic development of the rural communities. Forests and forest produce-based industries make an important contribution to the economy of the state.

However, things are changing fast. Owing to rapid urbanization, the pressure on forest is increasing. This has resulted in the decline of several species of plants. These are called threatened species, which may become extinct soon, if not protected.

Madhya Pradesh have 32 varieties of such plants like Gondi (Cordia sinensis), Kuchla (Strychnos nux-vomica), Udaal (Sterculia villosa), Rohida (Tecomella undulata), among others that are rare and on the verge of extinction. Forests serve as lifeline to people residing in them.

The rare endemic and threatened (RET) species play a key role in maintaining the diversity of the forests and fulfill the need of people residing in them. Thus, these species are not only important from an economic point of view and their medicinal benefits but also for the overall health of the forest. Since plants in the forests are dependent on each other, it would be wrong to think that the endangerment of these species will not have an impact on the health and ecosystem of the forests. These plants keep forest healthy, have cultural values, local people have traditional beliefs relating to their marriage , birth , death , at different occasions, celebrations , have fodder value, evolved after so many years. The extinction of these species will also have an adverse effect even on climate change and increase global warming. Thus, it is utmost necessary to protect these species, encourage plantation and spread awareness on them.

To protect these, the Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh has grown 70 lakh saplings of the species and are requesting individual to take them and plant them at their homes or forests near their homes. Enthusiastic individuals can get in touch with the Forest Departments in their respective districts to get hold of these rare and endangered saplings. The Department has decided to appreciate all such individuals who plant these saplings and care for them. The forest management is looking forward to new thoughts involving people’s views and their efforts to save the biodiversity of Madhya Pradesh.

These rare and close-to-extinction plants species need our immediate care and attention. Thus, the Forest Department, Madhya Pradesh, in association with MP MyGov, is running a campaign for their protection and preservation. As a part of it, we request you to share with us your ideas on ways these plants can be conserved.
Each of your suggestions can go on to give a new lease of life to these near- extinct plants.
