In order to spread awareness on the need of celebrating an eco-friendly Diwali, the Environment Planning and Coordination Organisation (EPCO) is organizing a contest on MP MyGov portal on the ‘Green Diwali Healthy Diwali’ for students, teachers and professors of eco-club schools and colleges across Madhya Pradesh. The campaign aims to encourage young people to celebrate Diwali in an environment-friendly way.

All round the year, we keep waiting for Diwali with bated breath. The ‘Festival of Lights’ is an embodiment of hope and bonhomie. It symbolizes the towering victory of good over the bad, light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, and virtues over vices.

All of us have fondest childhood memories of Diwali. However, things are changing fast. Today, Diwali stands more as a symbol of noisy firecrackers, smoke, smog and noise pollution. It is about time we acknowledge the fatal consequences of firecrackers and the environmental hazard caused by them.

Participants are requested to share the different ways in which they wish to celebrate an eco friendly Diwali this year. In addition to sharing ideas of celebrating pollution-free Deepawali, students, teachers in charge, professors, assistant professors can also share photos or videos of their celebration of eco-friendly Diwali. They can also share photos and videos of their friends and relatives who, inspired by them, decided to go the eco friendly way this Diwali.

10 best entries will be awarded Rs 2,000, along with a Certificate of Appreciation, while the next 10 best entries will receive Rs 1,000 each and a Certificate of Appreciation.

Celebrations, lights, sweets, gifts, family and friends – these are the things that define Diwali. The mood across the country is jubilant, festive, and extravagant. But year after year, one smoking issue emerges and that is firecrackers and the impact they have on the environment. However, there may be some who want to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali but are not sure how to go about it.
